MAPLE BATS AND ASH BATS

The Northern Mash Baseball Company now can supply lumber directly to you. Do you need turning billets to make some bats. Or are you a current bat maker who is interested in using the same wood we do. If so below we have listed the wood that is used to manufacture our baseball bats.

If you are doing a project for school on wood working then hopefully some of the images below will help you out in understanding our business and the process that each log goes through.

So how does it all happen or where does it begin? 60 years ago a tree was planted, either by someone or by nature. Now 60 years later that tree has grown big enough to be cut down and another planted in it's place.

Trees, a great renewable resource if you have the patience. The tree is then cut into manageable lengths and determined what type of application would be good for this particular log. Each log is inspected the good stuff gets split and cut into turning billets and the not so good stuff might turn into furniture, wood flooring and other wood products. It might even be turned into firewood. Those fire wood guys love to use our hardwood, the small logs burn longer than soft wood. I just hope they're not using our good bat stock to keep there fireplaces going!!

The turning billets are then dried and are ready for some serious spinning.

Sorting the lumber takes on an entire different meaning when it's 25 below zero. The best conditions for dense Canadian Rock Maple to grow. We'll cut this tree down and have it made into your bats.

Some of our pros like to come up and pick out the trees for themselves. It's funny what you learn about a player when you actually have time to talk with them one on one.

Best time to cut is in the winter, the ground is frozen solid and there's less damage done to our forests.

Wondering on how we make out bats? Well I'm not going to give it all away but here's a brief overview of the process.
Step 1; we take the square billet and cut off the edges and make it into an eight sided turning billet.
Step 2; we dowel it perfectly round to about 2 3/4" in diameter and we do our very first quality check and look for anything that shouldn't be there.
Step 3; if it passes inspection we then decide what model to make. Each billet is weighed and the lengths and models are selected at this time.
Step 4; we have completed our model length and shape. We check again for any defects or anything that will weaken the bat.
Step 5; we do a final sanding and we then remove the centers. Now the bat is check for weight and balance.
Step 6; time to stain, what colour did you request your bat to be stained with? Now it's ready to be trademarked.
Our logo prior to the fine detailing. Detailing our logo by hand, and our final quality check.
Our logo is delicately laser engraved onto our bats. There are a number of reasons why we have decided to laser engrave instead of some other ways. A couple of the reasons are it does not require 42,000lbs of pressure like a Brand or Foil Stamp would and placing on a decal, that would save us a ton of money but the look of our bats would definitely suffer. For the best bats on the market, they must look it aswell as perform. We then hand paint in the detailing of the logo and the barrel text. This is a pains taking process but it allows us some quality time with the bat to give it a very good and close inspection. A sticker would be quicker but for our PRO bats we want them to be un-paralleled. We are the only bat company that takes the time with every one of our bats to be sure they are perfect.

Finally complete and ready for shipping. This bat was made for Tom Wilson of the Blue Jays.

Hideki Matsuis' first big league hit was with a Maple bat. The Maple in his bat was supplied by us.
